((Ahahaha. That fits his personality fine then. XD))
He rubbed the back of his head (Which was really only increasing his loss of hair in said region) and said, "Well, the beaten down path, most often. It goes right by a roost of spearow though, and for some reason they don't take to me. If I tried to go around, I'd have to face a larger liklihood of rattata attacking me, and they can be just as vicious as spearow."

"All right, then," Mel said, moving to lead the way with her short legs, and feeling very adult and responsible. "Let's go." She began to walk.
Lapis raised an eyebrow, but trotted after Mel. He felt that things smelled a bit of fish, but he could be suspicious like that.

"Thankees." Following after he smiled slightly, and if it weren't for the fact that he was to 'stocky' to dance, he probably would have. This was, and should be, contributed to the fact he honestly though he wasn't going to get chased around by spearow, or rattata.
"Cuckroooow..." Shuddering faintly, the man listened to the faint cries of the spearow with something more than just slight dislike.

"Don't worry sir," Mel said, hearing the cries, as well. "They're not on us yet, and even if they are, we can take them, right Lapis?"
Her squirtle looked up at her. The firm confidence in his abilities was almost worrying. Spearow were vicious birds, and together in a flock they were a mob of vicious birds. This was yet another reason why he hadn't wanted to become a trainer's pokemon. He could deal with stuff in his own enviorment, but flying pkemon were another story. At least until he sprouted wings.

Micheal had more than a bit of doubt at that-The fight with the pidgey had been great, but a flock of spearow were a different matter. Still, having someone with a pokemon with them meant less of a chance of being attacked by spearow.
"People in Viridian really ought to set up a way to get people past the Spearow in safety...It'd make it much easier on us without strong pokemon-Or any pokemon!"

"Yeah, but everyone's really against having paved roads in Kanto," Mel pointed before quoting her mother. "It ruins the charm."
((Neech... brain dead.))

((<.< -has been drinking the amazing cream soda all day...With minor intervals of sweet tea. Mind is in hyperdrive.))
Micheal nodded, although since he was behind Mel it went unnoticed, "Don't need paved roads to make it safer. All you need is someone with some tough pokemon to escort people past the spearow's, like you are doing."
The calls of the spearow were beginning to get louder, and the specks in the distant sky could very well be classified as spearow...Certiantly there were many of them, and they were generally concentrated in one area.

"And possibly a good repel, the normal ones cost only 150 [special symbol], I think," Mel said looking up. "Gee, there sure seem to be a lot of them. If they do try to come for us and there's more than eight, please run Mister. Lapis and I can distract them, and then we'll run, too." Mel was really depending on the fact that spearow would be smart enough to decide to flee after Lapis knocked a few down. She just hoped that they weren't smart enough to figure out the power of numbers.
Lapis ooked at his short legs. Somehow he didn't think that he could run faster than a spearow could fly, even if they were not good flyers. Squirtle were made for standing stock still, taking abuse and then dishing it out again.

"Aye, repel if they sold them in Viridian. But they only rarely get a stock of them, so it's hard to get them." He eyed the spearow heartily agreeing with her. "If you're sure you'll be alright...But yes, there are alot of them. That's why it's so hard to get through the first route without any pokemon."
There seemed to be a scouting mission of spearow as two of them were flying towards them, having broken away from the main flock that was still some distance away. They warningly cried out in harsh tones, circling over the pair of humans and the squirtle, occasionally making a feignting dive...Before one of them dived down in a peck attack at Mel.

Mel crouched down quickly, covering her head with her arms. "Now, Lapis, while it's close to teh ground, tackle!" she instucted, a strategy forming. It wasn't a very good strategy, as it was based on making the Spearow angry enough to fly along at ground level to attack her.
Lapis lost no time taking his opportunity. He ran up, and then leapt, hoping to use his momentum and his heavy shell to squash the spearow.

The attack spearow was qutie literally flattened beneath Lapis' tackle, calling out indignantly in his tongue. As spearow were quite friendly (to each other), the other spearow was a bit indignant about the indignaty of its friend, and swooped down in a peck attack at the squirtle.
Micheal wasn't sure whether to run or not...If he ran, he'd be away from these two, but he'd be passing the rest of the flock alone. He ended up not running.

"Squirt, squir squir tle! (Hey, look, you were attacking my trainer!)" Lapis exclaimed as the birds ganged up on him. He scrunched as close to his shell as he could, not wanting to get hit by the hooked beaks.
"Lapis," Mel called out. "Use your tailwhip to knock the attacking bird away, and then get off his partner and tackle him while he's disoriented!"
Lapis wagged his tail feebly for a few seconds, trying to get the feel of it. Squirtle were not dog like, and moving his tail while he was flat on his chest plate was a new expereince for Lapis. However, he got his muscles to respond, and he swatted the spearow with his tail.

The spearow didn't care why Lapis had attacked, being as he wasn't a spearow and so ignored him. Or they wouldv'e, but the tail whip knocked away the spearow attack from the air, landing on the ground on its back and standing up shaking it's head, completely forgetting it's partner for a short bit.
The spearow who was still trapped beneath Lapis was trying despearatly to free itself, but not having much luck. It was a bird after all, and having a squirtle on you when you were a bird is something of a problem.

Luckily for the spearow it did not remain a problem for long, as Lapis raised himself from the spearow with a grunt. Once he was on his two legs again he shot off across the route, and tackled the former tormentor, who had been scratching at his shell.
Mel cheered from her vantage point. Then she looked up at her current companion. "Could you keep a look out for other spearow?" she asked. "I'd prefer to concentrate on the battle."

The tackle hit it hard, and it fell back again. Once more it stood up, ruffling it's feathers and growling at Lapis. It's partner stood up, shook it's head clear and then attempted to use a leer attack on Lapis, while taking to the air again.
Micheal nodded, "Yes!" Looking towards the distant flock, he was surprised to notice that it had moved closer. In fact, it still did seem to be doing so, if slowly. He had an inkling that they didn't know about the trouble their friends were in, and so moved in unsureness.
