((The title is actually taken from the Fanfic that stars Mel. In it she has one little obstical standing in the way of sucess -- she can't throw a pokeball straight to save her life.))
Mel walked down Route One listening to the sounds of the high grass rustling around her legs. Lapis was completely lost in the verdant swell, on a ripple at her side.

((Ahaha. That sounds funny.))
"Crooo..." The cooing sound came from no other than a pidgey, excitedly hopping admist the waving grass and scooping up unfortunate bugs into it's beak. Occasionally it would stop to look around, but it appeared to have hit the jackpot of bug-ville, and had dropped from his watchful mood into one of complete adoration for the Earth giving it such a treat.

((It actually started out as a Parody, but it now has a plot. Alex is one of the other main characters, I think you'd like the bulbasaur who appears in it ^^. Jack pot of bug-ville!))
Mel rubbed her hands excitedly together. "Oh wow," she breathed. "Lapis, look, a real-live pidgey! I bet you can gain some real experience off them, and bird pokemon are really useful!"
Lapis looked at her out of the corner of his eyes. His expression plainly stated: "Now why would you want me to attack the innocent creature again?"
Hwever, Mel, who was all too human and inexerienced when it came to the incatricies of body language, merely popped above the grass, and yelled: "Tail whip to stun it!"
Thousands of years of species memory took over, and Lapis was suddenly rushing theough the grass like a juggernaut. He skidded to a stop right in front of the surprised bird, and twirled to smack it along side the head with his tightly curled tail.

((I should want to read it sometime. XD That shall be the current site's quote...'Jackpot of Bugg-Ville!' XD))
With an undignified "Squawk!", the pidgey was hit full-force with the tail whip, and flapped it's wings frantically in an attempt to stay balanced. While barely suceeding, it had used an attack (If unknowingly) kicking up sand and dirt, hopefully into the face of Lapis. Of course, it hadn't been aiming...It was merely regaining balance. But hey, whatever worked!

Lapis coughed and spat, trying to wipe the dust from his eyes. "Ignore it, Lapis! Tackle!" Mel encouraged him. "You can hear the beating of it's wings, can't you?"
The squirtle nodded slowly, and then charged the pidgey.
((I shall put up a link to the interesting version with author's comments.))

((Whee.))
"Piiidgey!" It seemed to have had the same idea, as it met the tackling Squirtle with it's own tackle-It was the first to topple back however, clearly much weakened by the attack. It mostly likely had to do with the tail whip earlier done, but it wasn't down for the outing just yet. Awkwardly it took to the air, but not to flee-It's blood appeared to be roused, and the normally timid little pokemon was quite intent on winning the battle. Diving down in a tackle from the air, it called out...A battle cry?? "CooCooCoooo!"

Lapis met the tackle with a second tail whip. Mel had decided that the strategy was a good one, as each sucessive hit would do more damage, while attacking every other turn wasn't entirely crippling.
The pidigey slammed into the blue tail as a result, leaving lapis with the feeling of a very painful bruise toward his back side. He finished the pivot to the right, and then turned to face the pidgey, readying for another charge.

Of course, while it had tackled the tail, it had been rather painful to the bird pokemon, and it had a hard time gaining air again. The pidgey didn't seem to have much strategy, as it dove into another tackle again, despite the fact that it was clearly much weakened as it was.
((Ahaha. Sorry if I'm slow. -Is reading your fic- I keep planning to write one for meh family trainers...But I need a family name first. XD))

Lapis bunched his legs and sprang right at the on-coming pidgey. They colided in mid-air, and then the stocky turtle's body fell back to Earth. He landed on his hind legs, and smirked a little, since although he was bruised, he was not badly off.

That was nothing to say of the pidgey, as it fell to the earth with a sad little whine of loss. Definatly the sturdy little bird had taken on more than it could handle, and now lay on the ground in a daze, not quite sure what was up and what was down.
It is now possible to be captured!
Lapis gains a level!

Mel threw the pokeball. It wobbled through the air, and fell short of her intended target. She turned red. "Uh, Lapis, could you just roll the ball over to the pigey and touch it with the capture button please?"
Lapis rolled his eyes, and kicked the pokeball back to Mel.
"Guess not," she sighed, and walked over to touch the pokeball to the pokemon's beak.

The pidgey could apparantly still hear, even if it wasn't sure where the sound was coming from, as it seemed indignant beneath his dizziness at the pathetic capture it was being given. However, it disapeared in a flash of red light fairly easily, even if it seemed as if he might pop out of the pokeball at any moment, given that it rocked fiercly back and forth.
Eventually, however the little capture button faded back to white, and the pokeball lay still. Despite protesting, the pidgey had been caught.

Mel put the pokemon on the clip on her belt. She would let him out after she had healed him at the pokemon center in Viridian. For now she would concentrate on Lapis' training. She wanted him to be at least level ten before she got to the Viridian forest.
"What do you think of Agok for a name?" She asked Lapis.
The squirtle shook his head violently.
"Not for you, I meant the pidgey," Mel tried to reassure her partner.
The squirtle shrugged, he didn't realy care about the bird brain.

A stocky little man was standing off to the side, clapping his hands enthusiastically. "Great battle, great battle. I say gal, would you mind escorting me to Viridian? I don't need to go fast, 'case you want to stop along the way, but I don't have a pokemon of my own. Not very gifted in catching them, I'll have you know. I always get jumped by spearow though, so I'd appreciate some help? Of course, I'm not asking you to do that for free! I'll pay you. I don't have any money, but I do have a TM-Since I don't have a pokemon I can't use it, and even if I did, the only pokemon I'd have would be around here, and none of them can learn it. So what do you say?" He was at least thirty years old, already balding near the top with thick black hair covering the parts of his head that weren't bald, and a pair of small round glasses on top of a stubby nose. He was wearing a large white apron over a pair of brown slacks and a blue t-shirt, and definatly looked as if he could use some help.

"Sure," Mel said, a little taken aback by the fast rate at which he spoke ((When I read his dialagoue I read it really fast, y'know?)). "I've got two pokemon after all. Agok is a little beat up, but Lapis is perfectly all right. What route do you normally take to Viridian?"
